HISTORICAL SUMMARY
The history of Teulada is traced back to the beginning of mankind. The
Cova de la Cendra at Cap D´Or was the site where the Teulada ancestor
(Upper Paleolithic 15.000 /20.000 B.C.) lived. The archeological findings
by experts evidence it.
In other
places in the area such as la Cova de les Rates or El Morro Castellar
confirm this (The are schematic rupestrian paintings depicting the life
in the Bronze Age and the later settlement). Later the Iberians settled
here: ceramic remains have been discovered. The Cap D´Or was also
their settlement, so controlling the whole Teulada coast and Rada de Moraira
which spread beneath.
The muslims
left behind the most important heritage ever known after those primitive
cultures. The buildings, the irrigation and growing systems, the houses,
the streetplan-ning , the names and toponyms are a live evidence of that
period.
Benimarco, Benimeit, Pouet del Morro, ect. are only some examples. In
the 13th Century Jaume I the Christian king reconquered Teulada from the
arabs. The people from Catalonia and Aragón settled down in the
Teulada area and their language was also brought into the village. In
1386 the Teulada area was legally founded ;
The Lord of Llúria , Sarrià and Gandia were the first owners.
The Marquises of Ariza and Barons of Teulada followed them. In 19th century
it became a property of the Crown.
An important date in the history of Teulada, and also of Europe was 1410
when the Dominican San Vicente Ferrer took an outstanding part in the
history of Teulada; He visited on his permanent prea-ching travels, his
sister; Constanza , married to Pedro de Synia , the honourable notary
of the village.
The Ermita de la Font Santa, on the way to Moraira, the "Creueta
de l´Ave Maria, Constanza´s house, attached to the "
Sala Jurats i Justicies" (Justice Chamber), are historical testimonies
of the stay of the Valencian Saint in Teulada. His "Miracle de la
Font Santa", is recorded as a sprout of miraculous water
.By the 16th century the pirates and berbers sieged the village : The
fortified walls (some remains of it still exist in the Church built as
a fort), Inland and the lookout tower (now rebuilt ) on the top of the
Cap d´Or on the seaside were necessary.
New attacks of pirates took place in the 18th century and the fort, called
"Castell de Moraira", was built to protect the coast line. It
was destroyed by the English and rebuilt in 1980 . This Castle is one
of the Town symbols .
